Bhavani Ashtakam by Adi Sankara

Adi Sankara has written another gem of Sanskrit verse in praise of Bhavani (Durga/Parvathi) and surrenders himself to her. The verses are contemplative and at the same time denigrating himself in the presence of Goddess. Here is a rendition of this song in youtube.

I see a lot of resemblance between these 8 verses (octet) and many verses of Bhaja Govindam. http://www.hindudevotionalblog.com/2008/09/bhavani-ashtakam-lyrics-adi.html gives the song and an English Translation by Sri P. R. Ramachander. In this blog, we will give the ashtakam ITRANS format, Devangiri, translation in English (by Sri. P. R. Ramachander) and a Tamil translation. I used the website http://shivu360.blogspot.com/2009/06/bhavani-ashtakam.html for getting the Devangiri spelling right (at least I tried). At the end there is a rendition of Bhavani Ashtakam in youtube. Glory to Durga.

Stanza 1:

Itrans:

na taato, na maataa, na bandhurna na daataa,

na putro, na putri , na bhruthyo , na bhartaa |

na jaayaa na vidhyaa, na vrutir mamaiva,

gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

In Devanagiri:

न तातो न माता न बन्धुर्न न दाता

न पुत्रो न पुत्रि न भ्रुथ्यो न भर्ता |

न जाया न विध्या न व्रुतिर् ममैव

गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि ||

English Translation:

Neither the mother nor the father,
Neither the relation nor the friend,
Neither the son nor the daughter,
Neither the servant nor the husband,
Neither the wife nor the knowledge,
And neither my sole occupation,
Are my refuges that I can depend, Oh, Bhavani,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani.

Tamil Translation:

அம்மாவையோ, அப்பவையோ, சொந்தக்காரர்கலையோ, நன்பர்கலையோ, மகனையோ, மகளையோ, வேலைக்காரர்களையோ, கணவனையோ, மனைவியையோ, அல்லது வேலையையோ ஆபத்தில் நான் நம்பமுடியாது.

ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

Stanza 2:

Itrans:

bhaavabdhaava paare, mahaadhuHkhabhiiruH,

papaata prakaamii, pralobhii pramataH |

ka.msamsaarapaashaaprabadhaH sadaham,

gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

In Devanagiri:

भावब्धाव पारे महाधुःखभीरुः

पपात प्रकामी प्रलोभी प्रमतः।

कंसम्सारपाशाप्रबधः सदहम्

गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

I am in this ocean of birth and death,
I am a coward, who dare not face sorrow,
I am filled with lust and sin,
I am filled with greed and desire,
And tied I am by this useless life that I lead,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani.

Tamil Translation:

நான் பிறப்பு, இறப்பு என்ற கடலில் மூழிகிறேன். நான் ஒரு வருத்ததை பார்க்காமல் இருக்கும் கோழையாக இருக்கிறேன். நான் அன்பிலும் பாசத்திலும் மூழ்கிறேன். நான் ஆசையிலும், பேராசையிலும் மூழ்கிறேன். நான் இந்த வாழ்க்கை பந்தத்தில் மாட்டிக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறேன். ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

Stanza 3:

Itrans:

na jaanaami Dhaanam, na cha dhyaanayoogam

na jaanami tantram, na cha stotramantram |

na jaanami puujaam, na cha nyaasayoogam,

gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

In Devanagiri:

न जानामि ढानम् न च ध्यानयोगम्

न जानमि तन्त्रम् न च स्तोत्रमन्त्रम्।

न जानमि पूजाम् न च न्यासयोगम्

गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

Neither do I know how to give,
Nor do I know how to meditate,
Neither do I know Thanthra,
Nor do I know stanzas of prayer,
Neither do I know how to worship,
Nor do I know the art of Yoga,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani

Tamil Translation:

எனக்கு தானம் கொடுக்கத் தெரியாது. எனக்கு தியானம் பன்னவும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு தந்திரமும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு மந்திரமும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு பூஜை, புனஸ்காரமும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு யோக ஆஸனங்கலும் தெரியாது. ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

na jaanaami punyam, na jaanami tiirtham,

na jaanaami muktim, layam vaa kadaachit |

na jaanaami bhaktim, vratam vaapi maataa,

gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

न जानामि पुन्यम् न जानमि तीर्थम्

न जानामि मुक्तिम् लयम् वा कदाचित्।

न जानामि भक्तिम् व्रतम् वापि माता

गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

Know I not how to be righteous,
Know I not the way to the places sacred,
Know I not methods of salvation,
Know I not how to merge my mind with God,
Know I not the art of devotion,
Know I not how to practise austerities, Oh, mother,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani

எனக்கு நல்ல பாதையில் போகவும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு புனித இடஙளுக்கு போகவும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு வழ்க்கைலிருந்து விடுதலை பெறவும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு என்னுடைய மனத்தை கடவுளிடம் செலுத்தவும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு மனக்கட்டுப்பாடுடன் இருக்கவும் தெரியாது. தாயே

ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

kukarmii, kusangi, kubudhdiH kudaasaH

kulaachaarahiinaH kadachaaraliinaH |

kudrushtiH kuvaakyaprabandH, sadaaham,

gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

कुकर्मी कुसन्गि कुबुध्दिः कुदासः

कुलाचारहीनः कदचारलीनः।

कुद्रुश्तिः कुवाक्यप्रबन्द्ः सदाहम्

गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

Perform I bad actions,
Keep I company of bad ones,
Think I bad and sinful thoughts,
Serve I bad masters,
Belong I to a bad family,
Immersed I am in sinful acts,
See I with bad intentions,
Write I collection of bad words,
Always and always,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani.

Tamil Translation:

நான் கெட்ட காரியஙளைc செஇகிறேன். நான் கேடவற்களுடன் பழகுகிறேன். நான் கெட்ட எண்ணங்களை நினைக்கிறேன். நான் கேடவர்கிளிடம் வேலை செய்கிறேன். நான் கெட்ட குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்து இருக்கிறேன். நான் கெட்டவற்றைப் பார்க்கிறேன். நான் கெட்ட பாட்டுகளை இயற்றுகிறேன். எப்பொழுதும் ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

Stanza 6:

prajesham, ramesam, mahesham, suresham,
dinesham, nisiitheshvaram vaa kadachit|
na jaanami chaanyat sadaaham sharanye,
gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

In Devanagiri:

प्रजेशम् रमेसम् महेशम् सुरेशम्
दिनेशम् निसीथेश्वरम् वा कदचित्।
न जानमि चान्यत् सदाहम् शरन्ये
गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

Neither do I know the creator,
Nor the Lord of Lakshmi,
Neither do I know the lord of all,
Nor do I know the lord of Devas,
Neither do I know the God who makes the day,
Nor the God who rules at night,
Neither do I know any other Gods,
Oh, Goddess to whom I bow always,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani

எனக்கு படைத்தவனும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு லக்ஷ்மியின் கணவனையும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு கடவுளின் தலைவணையும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு தேவர்களின் தலைவணையும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு பகலை உண்டு பண்ணுபவனையும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு இறவிற்கு வெளிccஅம் தருபவனையும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு மற்ற கடவுள்களையும் தெரியாது. எனக்கு ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

vivaade, viShade, pramaade, pravaase,
jale chaanale parvathe shatrumadhye|
aranye, sharanye sadaa maam prapaahi,
gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

In Devanagiri:

विवादे विषदे प्रमादे प्रवासे
जले चानले पर्वथे शत्रुमध्ये।
अरन्ये शरन्ये सदा माम् प्रपाहि
गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

While I am in a heated argument,
While I am immersed in sorrow,
While I am suffering an accident,
While I am travelling far off,
While I am in water or fire,
While I am on the top of a mountain,
While I am surrounded by enemies,
And while I am in a deep forest,
Oh Goddess, I always bow before thee,
So you are my refuge and my only refuge, Bhavani

நான் தீவிர வாக்குவாதம் செய்ய்யும்பொழுதோ நான் துக்கத்தில் மூழ்கிக் கொன்டிரண்தபொழுதோ நான் ஆபத்தில் தவித்துக் கொன்டிரண்தபொழுதோ நான் வெளியே பயனம் செய்ய்யும்பொழுதோ நான் நெருப்பிலோ, தண்ணீரலே இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் மலை மேல் இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் விரோதிகலுக்கு நடுவில் இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் காட்டுக்கு நடுவில் இருக்கும்பொழுதோ ஓ கடவுளே உங்களுக்கு தலை வணங்குகிறேன் ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.

anaatho, daridroo, jaraarogayuktoo,
mahaakshiinadeenaH, sada jaaDayavaktraH |
viShatou praviShTaH praNaShTaH sadaaham
gatisthwam, gatisthwam thwam ekaa bhavaani ||

अनाथो दरिद्रो जरारोगयुक्तो
महाक्शीनदेनः सद जाडयवक्त्रः।
विषतो प्रविष्टः प्रणष्टः सदाहम्
गतिस्थ्वम् गतिस्थ्वम् थ्वम् एका भवानि॥

English Translation:

While being an orphan,
While being extremely poor,
While affected by disease of old age,
While I am terribly tired,
While I am in a pitiable state,
While I am being swallowed by problems,
And while I suffer serious dangers,
I always bow before thee,
So you are my refuge and only refuge, Bhavani

நான் அனாதையாக இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் ஏழையாக இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் வயதனா காலத்தில் இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் கலைப்பாக இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் இரக்கம் படியாக இருக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் பிரச்சினையில் மூழ்கீ கொண்டிரிக்கும்பொழுதோ நான் பெரிய ஆபத்தில் மாட்டிகொண்டு இருக்கும்பொழுதோ உங்களுக்கு தலை வணங்குகிறேன் ஓ பவானி, நீங்கள் தான் எனக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரவேண்டும்.
